The King’s Road has had 400 years of reinvention. Today, the King’s Road is one of London’s most vibrant high streets, a place to live, to work, a route to local schools and a destination for visitors to explore its past and experience its current retail, cultural and food and beverage offer.
To ensure the King’s Road continues to serve residents, businesses, cultural institutions, school children and visitors alike, in collaboration with local stakeholders, a place-based Action Plan has been created.
The action plan aims for the King’s Road to continue to be an attractive, safe and sustainable place. It is organised across the following six key themes with examples of the type of improvements that could be delivered:
- Cultural and heritage placemaking – art as a wayfinding tool to encourage exploration of the King’s Road westbound and continue the programme of arts including murals, sculpture, temporary installations, digital and interactive art
- Environment, air quality and traffic management – better management of servicing and deliveries, protecting existing trees and seeking opportunities for additional planting, encouraging sustainable travel options and supporting retrofit of buildings
- Accessibility – continuous footways at all junctions and replace uneven and maintain even footways
- Place management – better management of waste collection, encouraging more recycling, expand CCTV, improve lighting and ensuring good management of commercial premises
- Public realm – decluttering and rationalising unnecessary signs and street furniture and widening footways at pinch-point locations. Plans for locations, such as enhancements for the piazza at Royal Avenue, will be developed in consultation with residents, local stakeholders and council, and once funding has been secured, stage two of this project will proceed.
- Curation of the King’s Road offer – champion leasing strategies that complement the strong King’s Road identity
The Action Plan is a mix of location-specific projects, as well as projects that cover the entire length of the King’s Road. All projects aim to enable the King’s Road to work better for everyone, of all ages.
The Action Plan will be delivered in partnership by stakeholders, including Kensington and Chelsea Council (K&C), Transport for London (TfL), the King’s Road Partnership (KRP), property owners, local businesses, and residents and community groups.
As projects commence and are delivered, we will be updating the website to ensure everyone is fully informed.
